This policy explains what information Learn to Upholster collects when you visit, how it is used, and the choices you have. We keep data collection to a minimum.

Who we are
Learn to Upholster (learntoupholster.com) is a free educational website run by Shaun Greenwood, trading as Greenwood Upholstery, based in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK data protection law, Greenwood Upholstery is the data controller for this site. For any privacy question, contact us at [email protected].
The short version
We don’t ask you to create an account or hand over personal details to read the site, and we don’t sell your data. Most of the data-gathering here comes from third parties — chiefly Google, which serves the adverts — and you can opt out of personalised advertising at any time, as explained below.
Information we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you put in your message. We use it only to reply to and deal with your enquiry.
Information collected automatically
As with almost all websites, our hosting provider records standard technical information when a page is requested — such as your IP address, browser type, device and the pages you view — to keep the site secure and running.
Information stored in your browser
Some features (such as remembering your place in a chapter, or your bookmarks) save small amounts of data in your own browser using local storage. This stays on your device, is not transmitted to us, and you can clear it at any time through your browser settings.
Cookies and advertising
Cookies are small files that a website or its partners place on your device. They are used here in two ways: to let the site function and remember preferences, and through third-party advertising and, where enabled, analytics.
Google AdSense and third-party advertising
We use Google AdSense to display adverts. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to our site and other sites on the internet.
You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings at google.com/settings/ads. For other vendors, you can use the opt-out tools at aboutads.info/choices and youronlinechoices.eu. Opting out does not remove adverts; it makes them less tailored to you. Google’s advertising practices are described at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Other ad networks may also place cookies. We do not control these, and recommend reviewing the relevant third party’s own privacy policy.
Analytics
We may use a web-analytics service (such as Google Analytics) to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used so we can improve it. Where used, this collects anonymised usage data such as pages visited and approximate location, and is not used to identify you personally.
Managing cookies
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, and set your browser to refuse them. Some features may not work as well if you do.
Affiliate links
Some pages contain affiliate links, principally through the Amazon EU Associates Programme. If you click one and buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, and the retailer may set its own cookies. This never affects the price you pay or what we choose to recommend, and links of this kind are marked.
How we use information
We use the information above to operate, maintain and secure the website; to respond to enquiries you send us; to show advertising that helps keep the site free; and to understand and improve how the site is used.
Legal basis (UK GDPR)
Where UK data protection law applies, we rely on our legitimate interests in running and improving a free website and replying to your messages, and on your consent for non-essential cookies such as personalised advertising, which you can withdraw at any time.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have rights over your personal data, including the right to access it, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk.
Data retention
We keep email correspondence only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and any follow-up. Technical logs are retained for a limited period by our hosting provider.
Children
This website is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
International visitors
The site is operated from the United Kingdom. If you access it from elsewhere, your information may be processed in the UK and in other countries where our service providers operate.
Links to other sites
Our site links to other websites (for example, suppliers and our own business site). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date above shows when it last changed, and significant changes will be reflected here.
