Why does my sofa fabric bobble?
Because short loose fibres in the yarn are working their way to the surface, tangling into little balls under friction, and then being held there by the longer fibres they are still attached to. It is called pilling, it is a property of how the yarn was spun rather than a sign of misuse or poor cleaning, and on most fabrics it stops once the loose fibre has been used up — typically within the first few months. Blended fabrics are the worst offenders, because a strong fibre anchors the pills formed by a weaker one instead of letting them drop off. The fix is a fabric shaver, and the mistake is pulling them off by hand.
Everybody thinks bobbling means the fabric is wearing out. It usually means almost the opposite — the fabric is shedding the loose material it was made with, and once that is gone it settles down.
Worth understanding properly, though, because there is a version of this that is a fault, and knowing the difference is the difference between reaching for a five-pound gadget and making a complaint.
What a pill actually is
Most upholstery yarn is spun from staple fibre — short lengths, a few centimetres each, twisted together into a thread. However well it is spun, some fibre ends sit near the surface rather than being locked into the twist.
Rub that surface and three things happen in order. The loose ends work their way out. They tangle with each other into a small ball. And then — this is the part that matters — that ball stays put, because it is still anchored by fibres that run back into the yarn.
So a pill is not fabric coming apart. It is fabric tidying itself up badly.
Why blends are the worst
This is the bit that explains most real-world pilling and almost nobody mentions it.
Pure wool pills readily — but wool fibres are relatively weak in that situation, so the pills break off and fall away on their own. You may barely notice.
Put that same wool in a blend with polyester and the picture changes completely. The polyester is far stronger, it does not break, and it holds the pill on the surface indefinitely. You now have permanent bobbles made largely of wool, anchored by polyester that will not let go.
Which is why a poly-cotton or poly-wool blend often bobbles far more visibly than either fibre would alone. The blend was chosen to combine the strengths of both. It also combined a weakness neither had by itself.
Which fabrics pill, roughly
- Worst: loosely spun staple blends — poly-cotton, poly-wool, acrylic mixes, and cheaply spun polyester staple.
- Moderate: pure wool, pure cotton, chenille. They pill, but the pills tend to shed.
- Least: filament yarns, where the fibre runs continuously through the thread rather than being spun from short lengths. Microfibre, most performance polyesters and solution-dyed acrylics come into this group. There are simply no loose ends to migrate.
- Effectively none: leather, vinyl, and tightly woven flat filament cloths.
Twist matters too. A tightly spun, tightly woven cloth holds its fibre ends in. A soft, loosely spun yarn — which is exactly what gives a fabric that lovely soft handle in the showroom — lets them out.
Where it shows, and why there
Seat fronts, arm tops, headrests and the outer third of seat cushions. The same contact points as every other upholstery problem, because pilling needs friction and that is where friction happens.
Clothing plays a bigger part than people expect. Denim, knitwear and fleece are abrasive, and they also contribute their own loose fibre into the mix. A sofa used mostly by somebody in a jumper will bobble faster than one used by somebody in a shirt, all else being equal.
Does it stop?
On a decent fabric, yes. There is a finite quantity of loose fibre in the cloth, and once it has migrated out and been removed, the surface stabilises. Expect the worst of it in the first three to six months, then a marked decline.
If it is still producing new pills a year in, at the same rate, that is a different problem. That points to a yarn that is genuinely shedding rather than settling, and it is worth taking up with whoever supplied the fabric.
How to get rid of them
One tool, and it costs very little.
A battery fabric shaver. A rotating blade behind a mesh guard that cuts the pills off flush without touching the cloth. It is the right answer and it is what upholsterers and dry cleaners use.
Technique, because people do get this wrong:
- Work on a flat, supported surface — lay the cushion down rather than shaving it in place on a curved arm.
- Light pressure. Let the blade do it. Pressing the guard into the weave is how you cut the fabric itself.
- Short overlapping passes in one direction, not scrubbing back and forth.
- Empty the collector often; a full one stops cutting cleanly.
- Vacuum afterwards.
And the things not to do:
- Do not pull them off by hand. The pill is anchored to fibres running into the yarn. Pulling it drags those out too, and you are now removing cloth rather than surplus.
- Do not use a razor blade or a disposable razor. It works right up until it takes a slice out of the weave, and on a pile fabric it will shave the pile flat.
- Do not use a razor on velvet, chenille or anything with a pile at all. A shaver on its highest guard setting, very lightly, or leave it alone.
A pumice-type sweater stone works on flat robust cloth and is a poor idea on anything delicate. A sticky lint roller lifts loose surface fluff but will not touch an anchored pill.
The test standard nobody tells you about
Here is the genuinely useful thing to take away if you are choosing fabric.
Martindale does not measure pilling. The rub count everybody quotes — 25,000, 40,000, 100,000 — is an abrasion resistance figure, tested under BS EN ISO 12947. It tells you how long the fabric survives being rubbed. It says nothing whatsoever about whether it will bobble.
Pilling has its own standard: ISO 12945, which grades a fabric from 1 to 5, where 5 is no pilling and 1 is severe. Part 1 is the pilling box method, originally developed by ICI; part 2 is a modified Martindale method, and part 2 is the one usually quoted for upholstery. Confusingly it runs on the same machine as the abrasion test — but it is assessing how the surface looks, not when the cloth breaks down. A good upholstery fabric should be grade 4 to 5.
Most spec sheets carry it. Almost no customer asks for it, and a great many people have bought a 40,000-rub fabric assuming that covered everything, then been surprised. When it is genuinely a fault
Worth complaining about if:
- Severe pilling appears within weeks rather than months.
- It is still producing new pills at the same rate after a year.
- The fabric was sold with a pilling grade of 4 or 5 and is plainly behaving like a 2.
- It is pilling in areas nobody touches, which suggests a problem with the cloth rather than with friction.
Not worth complaining about if it appeared in the first few months, on contact areas, on a soft blended fabric, and is slowing down. That is the cloth doing what that construction does, and no supplier will accept it as a defect — because it isn't one.
The short version
Buy a fabric shaver, use it gently, and stop worrying. Most bobbling is a phase rather than a decline, and the fabric underneath is generally in perfectly good order.
And when you next choose a cloth, ask two numbers rather than one. The rub count tells you how long it lasts. The pilling grade tells you how it will look while it does.
